I ordered this a couple years back directly from Amazon, and I''m just now noticing it''s actually a cheap knockoff CD-R, MADE BY AMAZON and sold under the banner of the real thing. Same with the copy of Neil''s "Life" I ordered. It thus has no resale value whatsoever on Discogs. What a load of crap. And, under my state''s UCC, offering the genuine article and selling a fake is, um, fraud. I''d be interested what Neil Young and Geffen Records would think about this practice? Anyway, this is reason #234,649,985 I no longer use Amazon. Discogs all the way. Peace out.

Neil Young''s "Life" was not the best CD but it is worthy, and this is knowing that Neil was not happy in his contract with Geffen Records. Many people have knocked the songs on this CD, but to me, I hear the grunge sound for which he''s famous on "Too Lonely," "Prisoners of Rock N Roll," and "Cryin Eyes." There''s a heartfelt tribute to war veterans with "Long Walk Home" that has the feel of some older stuff. Now, the difference is there is experimentation - a feel for trying to give the music a feel for its period in sales appeal, and this may be what Young was unhappy with and many fans may say fooled with the "brand" that is Young. I disagree, although I think artists should stay "true" I think it is worthy to break new ground and I think the synthesizer on "MidEast Vacation," the sound effects on "Inca Queen" and the synth breathing on "We Never Danced" at least shows an effort to try and break new ground. Granted, "Mideast Vacation" feels a bit too lengthy, as does "Inca Queen," but at least it''s a valiant attempt by an artist, who when struggling with his artistic honesty and credibility, did keep his lyrics and music base to the songs honest. In "Inca Queen," there is some nice guitar work and "Long Walk Home" gives us a stripped down harmonica and piano to help set the mood to walk us with those soldiers and get a feel for them. So, every artist must be "true" but they must be willing to break new ground in order to bridge themselves artistically. This CD is that bridge - an unstable one - but a bridge none-the-less. If you like Young, or would like to learn more about his artistic life-span, then this CD is a valid buy. For the rest of you, download a few tracks for .99 if you''re skeptical and make your decision on what you hear.

3 stars always seems harsh for a NY album. But "Prisoners of Rock `n` Roll" is such a poor and cliched song, despite it`s obvious critical target being the totally deserving David Geffen, that you couldn`t award 4 stars. "We Never Danced" is just too syrupy, as is "Inca Queen" (a shame, as the subject has been so well-addressed by Neil in the past, obviously with "Cortez The Killer", but also on the less-acclaimed "Like An Inca", from Trans). "Mideast Vacation" is a great opener though, one of the best songs Neil produced in the 80s, the nearest we have got to the dark side since the ditch trilogy, and particularly, "Revolution Blues". "When Your Lonely Heart Breaks" is also such a powerful and dramatic ballad that you would have to be mad not to be moved by it. These songs possibly edge it above a mid-to-low ranking NY album...but the rest of the songs are, well, pretty average, occasionally dipping above that and occasionally below. ("Long Walk Home" is a good example of this. It seems like it might be great, but then rather loses pace and falls flat). It`s worth a listen, now and again, but isn`t really quite what you might want from Neil and Crazy Horse. By any other artist you`d be raving about it for weeks. It`s all relative.

Wedged between the relatively casual Landing On Water and the fully committed This Note''s For You, this LP is something of a forgotten treasure. The songs were, however, (largely) recorded live. There are keyboards, the type which dated a lot of music from this time.. so it''s not the raw Crazy Horse of El Dorado. If you appreciate Young''s political bent, this album put a spotlight on some of the international issues of the time. It was his last LP for Geffen, marking an end to a troubled tenure, representing a near decade of hit and miss albums. And if it''s the CD you''re after, it sounds great.

Die 80er Jahre gelten allgemein als mit die problematischste Phase in Neil Youngs Karriere. Nach den End-70er Meisterwerken RUST NEVER SLEEPS und LIVE RUST (mit Crazy Horse) kamen Jahre stilistischer Experimente, die allesamt äußerst umstitten waren: Vocoder-Stimm-Verfremdungen und Synthi-Einsatz (TRANS; LANDING ON WATER), 50er-Jahre Rockabilly (EVERYBODY''S ROCKIN''), Country pur (OLD WAYS), jazziger Rhythm''n''Blues (THIS NOTE''S FOR YOU)... Und alleine das unglaubliche PRISONERS (OF ROCK''N''ROLL) mit seinen "wunderschönen" Zeilen "people tell us that we''re playin'' too loud / that''s what our music''s about" und "that''s why we don''t wanna be good / O-o-o-o-o / we''re prisoners of rock''n''roll" lohnt schon die Anschaffung... (Übrigens ist die Live-Version dieses Songs auf dem 96er YEAR OF THE HORSE noch umwerfender!) Zu erwähnen bleibt, dass die 2000er Remaster-Wiederveröffentlichung klanglich hervorragend ist...
